Announced on July 10, 2024, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) extended the allowance for remote monitoring of specific diagnostic imaging exams through December 2025.
The ruling, initially granted in 2020 due to the pandemic has been extended several times thus far, most recently being extended until December 2025. Part of the Medicare Physician Fee Schedule for 2025, this extension would allow physicians to continue offering virtual direct supervision for contrast-enhanced imaging studies such as MRI and CT scans.
Highlights of the Extension:
• Remote supervision is extended until December 31, 2025.
• Coverage continues for Level 2 diagnostic tests under direct supervision.
• Physicians must be 'immediately available' via real-time, two-way audio and visual communication technology.
Patients in rural or underserved areas can continue to receive necessary imaging services without delay.
Remote supervision allows for faster response times, increasing patient safety leading to better outcomes.
